Artykuł ten napisałem w 2013 r. Wtedy jeszcze nie wiedziałem o mutacji R1a Z93, którą wyróżniali się Ariowie, czyli ci, którzy poszli na wschód Azji. Nie wiedziałem też, że to Ariowie byli potomkami Słowian, a nie odwrotnie. Właśnie dlatego w tym artykule, wtedy dla mnie, Ariowie i Słowianie, to jedno i to samo. Zatem, według obecnej wiedzy, należy stwierdzić, że Ariowie (hg R1a Z93) byli potomnkami Słowian (hg R1a Z645). Z hg R1a Z645 wydzieliła się również, już typowo słowiańska hg R1a Z282, która pozostała w Europie Środkowej. Biorąc pod uwagę szlaki handlowe ze wschodu Azji do Europy oraz z Europy do Azji (północna odnoga Szlaku Jedwabnego), to przedstawiciele słowiańskiej R1a Z282 i przedstawiciele aryjskiej R1a Z93 spotykali się przekazując sobie zdobycze kulturalne i technologiczne. Pomimo tych różnic genetycznych między Słowianami i Ariami, to dla światłych Hindusów, wszyscy Słowianie to Ariowie. Dla Hindusów, Słowianie i Ariowie mieli i mają wspólny język, kulturę, a nawet charakterystyczny wygląd. Jednak, według obecnej wiedzy, rozciąganie aryjskości na współczesnych Słowian jest dużym nadużyciem, albowiem nie wiadomo, gdzie i kiedy powstało miano Aria – Szlachetny. Nazywanie Słowian Ariami jest raczej uogólnieniem. Mimo powyższych uwag, sens mojego artykułu nie zmienił się. Tzw. współcześni Germanie tym bardziej nie mają prawa do tzw. aryjskości. Ponieważ raczej nie mieli nawet szans zmieszania się genetycznego z aryjską hg R1a Z93.

Gustaf Kossinna [1858-1931] (sometimes spelled Gustav) was a German archaeologist and ethnohistorian who is widely perceived as having been a tool of the archaeology groupie and Nazi Heinrich Himmler, although Kossinna died during Hitler’s rise to power. But that’s not the whole story.

Educated as a philologist and linguist at the University of Berlin, Kossinna was a late convert to prehistory and an ardent supporter and promoter of the Kulturkreise movement—the explicit definition of cultural history for a given area.

He was also a proponent for Nordische Gedanke (Nordic Thought), which could be crudely summarized as „real Germans are descended from the pure, original Nordic race and culture, a chosen race who must fulfill their historical destiny; no one else should be allowed in”.

BECOMING AN ARCHAEOLOGIST

According to a recent (2002) biography by Heinz Grünert, Kossinna was interested in ancient Germans throughout his career, although he started out as a philologist and historian. His principal teacher was Karl Mullenhoff, a professor of German philology specializing in Germanic Prehistory at the University of Berlin. In 1894 at the age of 36, Kossinna made the decision to switch to prehistoric archaeology, introducing himself to the field by giving a lecture on the history of archaeology at a conference in Kassel in 1895, which actually didn’t go very well.

Kossinna believed that there were only four legitimate fields of study in archaeology: the history of the Germanic tribes, the origin of the Germanic peoples and the mythical Indo-Germanic homeland, archaeological verification of the philological division into east and west Germanic groups, and distinguishing between ​Germanic and Celtic tribes.

By the start of the Nazi regime, that narrowing of the field had become a reality.

ETHNICITY AND ARCHAEOLOGY

Wedded to the Kulturkreis theory, which identified geographical regions with specific ethnic groups on the basis of material culture, Kossinna’s philosophical bent lent theoretical support to the expansionist policies of Nazi Germany.

Kossinna built an unarguably immense knowledge of archaeological material, in part by painstakingly documenting prehistoric artifacts in museums in several European countries. His most famous work was 1921’s German Prehistory: A Pre-Eminently National Discipline. His most infamous work was a pamphlet published at the end of World War I, right after the new state of Poland was carved out of the German Ostmark. In it, Kossinna argued that Pomeranian face-urns found in Polish sites around the Vistula river were a Germanic ethnic tradition, and so Poland rightfully belonged to Germany.

THE CINDERELLA EFFECT

Some scholars attribute the willingness of scholars like Kossinna to abandon all other archaeologies under the Nazi regime except for German prehistory to the „Cinderella effect”. Before the war, prehistoric archaeology suffered in comparison to classical studies: there was a general lack of funds, inadequate museum space, and an absence of academic chairs dedicated to German prehistory. During the Third Reich, high governmental officials in the Nazi party offered their gratifying attention, but also eight new chairs in German prehistory, unprecedented funding opportunities, and new institutes and museums.

In addition, the Nazis funded open air museums dedicated to German studies, produced archaeological film series, and actively recruited amateur organizations using a call to patriotism. But that’s not what drove Kossinna: he died before all of that came true.

Kossinna began reading, writing, and speaking about Germanic racist nationalist theories in the 1890s, and he became an avid supporter of racist nationalism at the end of World War I. By the late 1920s, Kossinna made a connection with Alfred Rosenberg, who would become minister of culture in the Nazi Government. The upshot of Kossinna’s work was a blossoming of emphasis on the prehistory of the Germanic peoples. Any archaeologist who did not study the prehistory of the Germanic people was derided; by the 1930s, the main society devoted to Roman provincial archaeology in Germany was considered anti-German, and its members came under attack.

Archaeologists who did not conform to the Nazi idea of proper archaeology saw their careers ruined, and many were ejected from the country. It could have been worse: Mussolini killed hundreds of archaeologists who didn’t obey his dictates about what to study.

THE NAZI IDEOLOGY

Kossinna equated ceramic traditions and ethnicity since he believed that pottery was most often the result of indigenous cultural developments rather than trade. Using the tenets of settlement archaeology—Kossinna was a pioneer in such studies—he drew maps showing the supposed „cultural boundaries” of the Nordic/Germanic culture, which extended over nearly all Europe, based on textual and toponymic evidence. In this manner, Kossinna was instrumental in creating the ethno-topography which became the Nazi map of Europe.

There was not uniformity among the high priests of Nazism, however: Hitler mocked Himmler for focusing on the mud huts of the Germanic people; and while party prehistorians like Reinerth distorted the facts, the SS destroyed sites like Biskupin in Poland. As Hitler put it, „all we prove by that is that we were still throwing stone hatchets and crouching around open fires when Greece and Rome had already reached the highest stage of culture”.

POLITICAL SYSTEMS AND ARCHAEOLOGY

As archaeologist Bettina Arnold has pointed out, political systems are expedient when it comes to their support of research that presents the past to the public: their interest is usually in a „usable” past. She adds that abuse of the past for political purposes in the present is not restricted to obviously totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany.

To that I would add: political systems are expedient when it comes to their support of any science: their interest is usually in a science that says what the politicians want to hear and not when it doesn’t do that.

There seems to be a growing trend to over-simplistic assumptions in archaeology and linguistics, led by amateur and professional geneticists alike, due to the recent (only partially deserved) popularity of Human Evolutionary Biology.

These studies are offering ancient DNA samples, whose Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups and  admixture analyses are showing some new valuable information on ancient cultures and peoples. However, their authors are constantly giving uninformed conclusions.

I have read a good, simple description of the Kossinnian model in the book Balkan Dialogues (Routledge, 2017), which has been shared to be fully read online by co-editor Maria Ivanova.

Chapter 3, The transitions between Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in Greece, and the “Indo-European problem”, by Jean-Paul Demoule, offers a clear account of the difficulties found in tracing the arrival of Proto-Greek speakers to Greece or the “Coming of the Greeks”. The identifications of cultural breaks most commonly supported by academics as potentially signaling the arrival of Proto-Greeks are cited, including the Early Helladic III period ca. 2300 BC (with the diffusion of Mynian ware), or the Middle Helladic period ca. 2000 BC. The problem of finding a clear cultural break before the emergence of Mycenaean Greece (which obviously spoke an early Greek dialect) has led some to adopt a “Palaeolithic autochthonous theory” (Giannopoulos 2012), which offers still more problems than it solves.

Of interest is his reference to Kossinna in light of the recent popularity in resorting to DNA to answer all problems. It is mandatory for the field of Indo-European studies – regardless of what renown labs and journals of high impact factor are publishing – to avoid carrying on “in the steps of race based cranial measurement which enjoyed its floruit in the 19th century before fading into oblivion.”

This is why, without denying the relationship between Indo-European languages, we need to question the validity of the overall model itself, which has shown itself to be over-simplistic in assuming the movement of permanent and long-lasting homogeneous “peoples”. More precisely, we have to criticize in details the “Kossinnian Model” underlying all those assumptions – “Kossinnian”, because of the German archaeologist Gustaf Kossinna (1858–1931), well known for the famous sentence: “Cultural provinces, which are clearly delimited on the basis of archaeology, correspond in every era to specific peoples or tribes” (“Scharf umgrenzte archäologische Kultur-provinzen decken sich zu allen Zeiten mit ganz bestimmten Völkern und Völkerstämmen”). Four basic assumptions arise from this central idea:

1. Changes in languages are due to population movements, usually involving conquest, and every migration implies a linguistic change.
2. Archaeological “cultures” are homogenous ethnic groups, with defined frontiers, based on the model of 19th- and 20th-century nation-states and equally on the model of biological entities that reproduce by parthenogenesis.
3. There is coincidence between language and material culture.
4. Finally, languages are also homogenous biological entities which are autonomous and clearly delimited, and which can reproduce by parthenogenesis or by scissiparity.

Unfortunately, none of these points is self-evident and each can be countered by a number of historical examples (Demoule 2014: 553–592).

While I agree with the first part of the first statement attributed to the “Kossinnian model”, i.e. that languages are usually the product of population movements (either involving conquest or not), the other statements are obviously and demonstrably false, and are frequently assumed in comments, blog posts, forums, and even research articles – particularly in those based on genetic studies -, and this trend seems to be increasing lately.

Gustaf Kossinna (ur. 28 września 1858 w Tylży, zm. 20 grudnia 1931 w Berlinie) – niemiecki lingwista, profesor archeologii na Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität w Berlinie oraz twórca „metody etnicznej”. Zajmował się głównie problematyką pochodzenia i rozprzestrzeniania się Germanów. Był on zgermanizowanym Mazurem^{[potrzebny przypis]}.

Teoria Kossinny

Był twórcą archeologii osadniczej, łączącej kultury archeologiczne z jednostkami etnicznymi. Uważał, że różnice i podobieństwa kulturowe wynikają ze zróżnicowania lub jedności etnicznej. Obszar określonych terytoriów kulturowych odpowiada zasięgowi osadnictwa głównych ludów i grup etnicznych. Jego uczniem był twórca poznańskiej szkoły archeologicznej prof. Józef Kostrzewski, który stosując bardzo zbliżoną metodologię doszedł do teorii autochtonicznej, zakładającej historyczną ciągłość osadnictwa słowiańskiego na terenie Polski od prehistorii, przez co stał się głównym polemistą i przeciwnikiem swojego nauczyciela.

Według Kossinny, plemiona germańskie miały w starożytności zasiedlać znaczne obszary środkowej Europy, włącznie z Polską, prasłowiańskie zaś, a później słowiańskie – błota Prypeci. Według niego Słowianie, odcięci od wszelkich prądów wyższej kultury, biedni i prymitywni, dopiero w VI wieku, wykorzystując sprzyjającą chwilę dziejową, zajęli dzisiejsze siedziby ku wschodowi i zachodowi, wtedy, gdy ludy germańskie stworzyły już bogatą cywilizację, niezależną od wpływów świata śródziemnomorskiego lub orientalnego.

Związki koncepcji Kossinny z narodowym socjalizmem

Już w chwili ogłoszenia swojej teorii, w 1895 roku, na zjeździe Niemieckiego Towarzystwa Antropologicznego w Kassel, sam Kossinna włączył ją w służbę niemieckiej idei narodowej, która miała uzasadniać terytorialne roszczenia Niemiec wobec ziem zamieszkanych przez Czechów i Polaków. Jego teorie dotyczące pochodzenia Germanów mocno wpłynęły na ideologię narodowosocjalistyczną. Uprawiana przez niego apoteoza prehistorycznej kultury germańskiej spowodowały, że po zwycięstwie wyborczym Narodowosocjalistycznej Partii Robotniczej Niemiec stał się wysoko ceniony w Niemczech. Między 1933 a 1936 rokiem pojawiły się 3 wydania jego książki Die deutsche Vorgeschichte w której twierdził m.in., że polskie Pomorze  oraz  Wielkopolska były prakolebką Germanów już w epoce brązu, podczas gdy ludność słowiańska pojawiła się tam o wiele później. Wychodząc z tego założenia uważał, że ziemie te należą się Niemcom, spadkobiercom starożytnych Germanów. Uczniowie Kossinny, jak prof. Hans Schleif, wówczas   Obersturmbannführer SS, podlegający bezpośrednio Reichsführerowi SS Heinrichowi Himmlerowi, prowadzili prace badawcze w Biskupinie, które miały udowodnić germańskie pochodzenie osady.

Przeciwko teorii Kossinny mocno występował jego były student, polski archeolog  Józef Kostrzewski, za co dostał się na listę wrogów III Rzeszy. J. Kostrzewski, choć odrzucał niektóre rasistowskie założenia G. Kossinny, przejął kilka jego podstawowych tez, w tym identyfikację zasięgu określonej kultury archeologicznej z zasięgiem wspólnoty etnicznej (plemieniem/ludem). Po przegranej przez Polskę  kampanii wrześniowej prof. Kostrzewski zdołał uciec, ale cały okres okupacji niemieckiej w Polsce musiał spędzić ukrywając się przed gestapo pod zmienionym nazwiskiem.
